You can tell when they are.
Students are acting out, they’re working on other stuff, and they’re talking to their friends.
What can you do about this?
Something that worked for me were adventure games.
These are PowerPoints that have a story.
Students read the slides out loud as a class. Usually you’ll have the class broken into two group, or teams. I find boys and girls works best.
When the story starts, students get choices.
That’s right – they have to read the slide and then in a group they have to talk about what they want to do.
If you want to take it a step further, have the students explain what they think about the choices.
After that, have them tell you what choice they want, and why.
After that, let the fun begin.
Depending on what happened, students will either move on or get hurt.
In some games they die.
That’s right – in some of these adventure games, students will die.
That’s just part of the fun.
Another part of the fun is rolling dice. You can figure out if a student gets hurt or not, if they find food, or if they hurt the bad guy.
Yep, ESL adventure games have fighting.
You can learn a lot about these games on my Adventure Games page. Also, check out these blog posts that discuss the games:
Get a free game that I used in my classes. It’s geared towards English First textbooks, but it’s a fun alien adventure that I know your students will enjoy.
It’s called The Wrath of Khan and there’s a lot more in that blog post.
The best deal is to buy all the adventure games in my ESL Adventure Game Pack. It’s $7.99 and you’ll save a few bucks.
